Hanging Stars – DIY 4th of July Decor

June 21, 2011 by Camille 12 Comments

A little holiday decor tradition started around Christmas – hanging decor from the chandelier. For each of the major holidays, I like to find something festive to hang from the chandelier. I originally came across these paper mache ornaments at Hobby Lobby, but actually found them for a better deal at CreateForLess.com.

Supplies and “How To”

I used 6 star shaped 3″ wide paper mache ornaments. I picked up some red, white, and blue spray paint. I originally purchased the paint at Hobby Lobby, but found the paint for about $5 less at Walmart.

Use masking tape to protect the ornament strings from getting painted. Put a couple coats of spray paint on each side of the ornaments.

The red and blue spray paint covered the ornaments well, but the white took a few extra coats.

Once the spray paint was dry, I wanted to add some speckles add some character. Originally, I was going to add white and blue speckles to the red ornaments, blue and red speckles to the white ornaments, and red and white speckles to the blue ornaments. After experimenting a bit I decided to just add white speckles to the red and blue ornaments and leave the white ornaments plain.

To create the speckles, use some acrylic paint and an old toothbrush.  Put the paint on the brush and stroke your thumb across the toothebrush to splatter the paint on the stars.

Finished Star Ornaments

Cute!

To finish, I added some hemp string tied at various lengths and hung the star ornaments from the chandelier.

Love it! I love stars & 4th of July decor. I have seen somewhere where someone made 3d stars out of paper, which I also loved. This would be easier, of course.

That’s a great idea too. The 3d paper stars would be really cute cause you could use a bunch of different paper patterns. Next year… 🙂
