This week’s questions are inspired by movies I’ve seen recently. Don’t worry; there are no spoilers.

    1. In The Spectacular Now, the main character is good at making everybody laugh. What social skill do you bring to a large party?
    2. In The Way Way Back, one character was supposedly there when, at the local water park, one person passed another on the huge water slide. What amazing or strange feat that everyone supposedly knows about did someone pull off in your area (or at your school)?
    3. In Austenland, the main character spends a week in a large Victorian-era house designed for fans of Jane Austen. In what book’s setting would you love to spend a week immersed?
    4. In The Heat, two main characters at first have great difficulty getting along personally, but they work unusually well together professionally. With whom have you had huge personal differences while still doing excellent work?
    5. In We’re the Millers, a marijuana-dealer and a reluctant stripper pose as husband and wife in order to complete a job. If you had to do the same for an undetermined length of time, who could pose as your Platonic life partner?

I just want to say now that I’m going to be very disappointed if nobody says Harry Potter or Dr. Seuss for question number 3! Thanks for participating, and have a spectacular weekend!

  9. Friday 5 for August 23: You too?

I have a pretty good Dan Fogelberg story to tell, about the time I saw him concert. But I don’t have time to tell it now because I’m about to go see a triple-bill of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, and I’ve never seen any of these films so I’m kind of excited.

I do have one question for you, though. I have debated the tone of the final line in Fogelberg’s “Same Old Lang Syne.” I contend that “and as I turned to make my way back home, the snow turned into rain” is a sad, sad, sad lyric. Most of my friends say that while it is certainly wistful, it’s not an unpleasant wistfulness that the persona communicates. Some go so far as to say it’s kind of a happy thing, like looking back and seeing how far you come and how much you’ve grown because you sometimes need reminders of your past to illustrate it. My question for anyone who cares to expound (call it a Friday 6) is: is that a happy note or a sad note that Fogelberg ends on?

Here are six questions taken directly from lyrics by U2. Because I’m in a U2 kind of mood today. I’m offering six because I have a feeling everyone will consider at least one of these questions pretty lame, so pick your favorite five of the six.

    :)

    1. Is it getting better, or do you feel the same? (from “One”)
    2. Do you shiver when you dream? Is there a pounding in your heart? (from “You’re the Only One that’s Real”)
    3. Is the sweetest melody the one we haven’t heard? Is it true that perfect love drives out all fear? (from “I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”)
    4. Do you feel anything at all? (from “Miracle Drug”)
    5. It’s gonna itch and burn and sting; do you want to see what the scratching brings? (from “Staring at the Sun”)
    6. Do you feel loved? (from “Do You Feel Loved?”)

  10. Friday 5 for August 16: The Person Who

I tried to write the gist of these questions in the questions themselves, but it got a little awkward, so I’ll just explain it here and try to make each question simpler. You know how, in our regular daily existences, we often run into the same people in the same contexts, but don’t know them by name? We often think of them as “The Guy Who Breathes Loudly,” or “Red-Haired Babe With The Porsche.” For each of these questions, please think of how you are referred to by others (perhaps as “The Person Who ___________”) who see you in these contexts.

And if that doesn’t make any sense, just answer any questions that pop into your head. I tried.

    1. At a business establishment you patronize regularly, what might the employees refer to you as, when they speak of you behind your back?
    2. Similarly, at your places of employment, current and/or past, what do either the patrons or brand-new employees who don’t remember your name yet probably refer to you as?
    3. Aliens have come to earth to observe families and take notes. If each member of your family is listed as the one who __________, which are you? (bonus question: what are the others in your family written down as?)
    4. You meet someone you had a crush on in high school, someone who didn’t know you felt that way (let’s say you meet him or her in the grocery store, and that the snow is falling Christmas Eve…). He or she doesn’t remember your name, but does remember you. How are you cataloged in this old crush’s memory?
    5. If a hobby of yours were to have some kind of club, and if the other club members only knew you by your particular preferences, styles, or behaviors in that hobby, how would they refer to you?

Normally, if I can’t ask the questions in a clear, simple manner, I abandon them and try something else, but I think the theme here is intriguing, so let’s all just try and do our best, shall we?

    :)

Thanks for participating, and have a wonderful weekend! Friday is a state holiday here; it is the day we commemorate Hawaii’s becoming the fiftieth state in the Union. So if you need a reason to indulge yourself this weekend, use that.
